Car Wash Employee Training Checklist

Stop training by shadowing. Start certifying. This is the condensed position certification checklist: the key tasks per position, each with its standard. A task is either trained and certified, or it's not trained — watching someone do it once doesn't count.

Certification rule: the trainee demonstrates each task while the trainer watches, answers the position's knowledge check without the sheet, then works one full solo shift under observation. All three = certified.

Pay Station Attendant — trained means

Greet + lane controlEvery car greeted within 30 seconds; directs to the correct lane; manages the queue without waving cars into each other.
Standard wash transactionRuns a basic wash sale start to finish — select, payment, receipt, directions — in under 60 seconds.
Membership salePitches the membership naturally, handles the top 3 objections, enrolls without errors in the POS.
Refund / voidProcesses refunds and voids per policy; knows what requires manager approval and never guesses.
Complaint handlingDe-escalates the top 5 complaints (missed spot, damage claim, wait time, price, membership billing) — calms, documents, gets the manager. Never argues.
Drawer disciplineCash handled per the money rules; drawer balanced at shift end; two-signature rule followed.

Tunnel Entrance / Loader — trained means

Hand signals + stop conditionsEvery signal crisp and consistent; knows all stop conditions cold; stops the line without hesitation when one appears.
Loading at rateLoads at the site's target cars-per-hour without causing conveyor stops; spacing consistent.
Vehicle screeningSpots the don't-loads: oversized vehicles, loose items, visible pre-existing damage, anything they're unsure about. When unsure — stop, don't load.
Pre-existing damage notationNotes visible damage before the wash per site procedure. This protects the site on claims.
Safety positionStands where they're supposed to stand, every time. Never reaches across the conveyor path. Knows where the e-stop is and isn't afraid to hit it.

Vacuum / Finish Area — trained means

Area readinessOpens the area to standard — vacuums on, hoses hung, cans empty and lined, supplies stocked — without being told.
Customer assistAnswers the common questions; helps without hovering; keeps the area flowing during volume.
Issue reportingReports equipment issues immediately — what, where, when — not at close, not tomorrow.

Cash / Office — trained means

Float + drawer countsCounts to the standard; variances documented, never hidden; two-signature rule every close.
End-of-day reportRuns the report, files it, flags anything unusual for the manager — same night, not next morning.
Cash red flagsCan name the cash red flags from the SOP and knows they go straight to the owner.

Why certification beats shadowing

Showing is not training. Without a certification standard, every trainer teaches their own version — including their bad habits — and new hires inherit whatever the last person did. The number-one reason hourly employees quit a wash isn't pay: it's being thrown into shifts they weren't prepared for, then blamed for the results. Structured training is retention.
