Car Wash Closing Checklist

Closing runs in reverse priority from opening: money first, equipment second, site third, handoff last. The most common closing failure is doing it backwards — powering down the tunnel while the drawer sits uncounted, then rushing the count at the end. Don't.

Last car + 30 minutes — Clear the site

Confirm the last car is clearNo vehicles in the tunnel or on the conveyor. Tunnel entrance coned, pay stations set to closed. One person stays at the entrance until the last car clears the dryer — nobody powers down the tunnel with a customer car inside. Ever.
Customer-area sweepVacuums off, hoses stowed, nozzles secured. Trash collected, cans relined. Lot walked clear.
Restrooms: check and lockChecked, stocked for the morning, locked, lights off.

T+30 to T+60 — Money

Reconcile cash drawersEach drawer counted against its POS report — bills, coins, counted not estimated. Over/short documented with the exact amount. Two signatures: counted by + verified by.
Run the end-of-day POS reportReport generated and filed; membership sales and refunds noted; compared against the cash count.
Safe dropCash secured per site policy. Drop log signed with amount, time, and initials. Nothing else happens until the money is right.

T+60 to T+90 — Equipment

Power down tunnel equipmentShutdown sequence per your equipment manual. Main disconnect OFF. No fault lights left blinking.
Verify the tunnel is clear — walk itPhysical walkthrough, flashlight in hand: no cars, conveyor stopped, no debris on the belt, blowers off. This is the one task you never skip.
Secure the chemical roomLevels noted for the morning reorder list. No leaks, no spills, no odors. Room locked.
Pay stations securedCash removed, screens to idle, covers and cabinets locked. Test the lock — a locked cover that doesn't latch is an unlocked cover.

T+90 to close — Site and handoff

Final lot walkClear of debris and customers. Gates and chains secured. No cars abandoned in vacuum stalls.
Signage to CLOSED, lighting to night modeOPEN off, CLOSED displayed. Security lighting on, non-essentials off, no dark zones at the entrances.
Log every equipment issue from the shiftIncluding the ones you fixed. The next opener reads this log.
Complete handoff notesTomorrow's opener gets: staffing notes, equipment status, chemical needs, anything unusual. Five minutes now saves an hour at 6:45 AM.
Set the building alarmPanel shows ARMED. Exit within the delay. Get the confirmation (call, text, or app ping) before you drive away — "I think I set it" is not set.
Lock office and manager areasAll interior doors locked, keys secured, POS logged out, safe locked.

The close standard

Money reconciled and secured, equipment powered down in sequence, site walked and locked, alarm set, next shift informed. A close you could defend to the owner line by line. The drive-away test: before you leave the lot, ask yourself — if the owner walked the site right now, would every item above pass? If the answer is "probably," go back and check the one you're unsure about.
